The Burning
by Stewart Conn

Directed by Charles Nowosielski
Music by Richard Cherns

"... a genuine step towards national theatre..."
The Observer 1971

"One way or another, it is those trapped in the middle that must pay the price."

James VI of scotland is at war with the 'Black Earl' of Bothwell, the North Berwick witches and himself.

The Burning explores the brutality exercised toward those caught in the middle of any struggle for religious or political power.

It deals with themes of witch-craft and superstition but sets them firmly within the context of the battle between authority and anarchy.

James stands for the divine right of kings, Bothwell for self expression and invidual freedom.

This timely and evocative re staging of Stewart Conn's classic play, four hundred years after the union of the crowns has a strong cast of well-known Scottish actors.

TO THE CROSS

Professional Scots actors are joined by 100 people from various denominations around Edinburgh and together make up the large cast, and inimitable to Theatre Alba's style, not short of artistic merit.

A truly ecumenical experience.

Everyone and anyone, people of all ages, were encouraged to participate whether playing a small role, as part of the chorus or by just attending the performance itself.

The performance of To The Cross began in the picturesque gardens and proceeded through the grounds, hugging the edge of the loch.

The pageant then paraded out of the grounds into the Village of Duddingston itself and finally ended up back in the gardens to experience the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
